Bhangra: The Workshop

presented by SNJV

Six Thursdays, March 4 - April 8
7-8pm PST
$0-120 sliding scale, NOTAFLOF

A virtual workshop exploring the high-energy, Punjabi dance form of Bhangra. This workshop explores this cultural art form beyond the gender binary and focuses on connecting to the rhythm within. All are welcome.

SNJV is an artist using dance, drag, and drama to showcase humanity. He infuses culture into dance and fashion to create performances for stage and film. He holds the title of Mr. GAPA 2019/2020 and is the first South-Asian title holder in GAPA’s history. (Gay Asian Pacific Alliance). He is co-founder of Parivar-a social collective to support and celebrate queer, trans, gender non-conforming folks connected to the South Asian diaspora. He is also a teacher who lectures about his research on drag, dance, and identity in university spaces.

While SNJV loves being in front of the camera, he enjoys stepping behind the lens to produce and direct films drawing on culture, queerness, and texture. His film work has been shared worldwide and you can explore his work at snjv.co/.

Beginning Modern for Older Movers

with Robin Nasatir

Mondays, April 5, 12, 19, 26
11:30am-12:45pm
$5-$80 sliding scale*

This 4-week series provides a low pressure, welcoming environment where participants can enjoy building strength, grace, and balance through dance. The class is designed with the older adult in mind, providing options and challenges to suit the needs and goals of those in the workshop. Each class starts with a thorough warmup and progresses to safe and fun modern dance sequences to a wide range of music including contemporary, jazz, classical, and music from around the globe. As we build the class material through the series, we also explore foundational dance elements like musicality, dynamics, focus and use of space. This class is open to all, but designed with the active older adult in mind so attendees can feel confident that it will be safe for their bodies and easily modified as needed.

*This is a 4-week series with the option to drop in on the first class to give it a try. The sliding scale is $5-20 for the first class, or $20-80 for the whole workshop. If you drop in for the first class and then choose to continue with the workshop, feel free to deduct and prorate the workshop fee for the remaining 3 classes.

Born and raised in Berkeley, Robin Nasatir started dancing at Shawl-Anderson at 11. In her early performing career, she was a founding member of Mobius Dance Company and then worked with various choreographers in the Bay Area and New York City. More recently, she has been performing with Dana Lawton Dances since 2010, and has performed with the Ruth Botchan Company, Amy Rosen, Nina Haft & Company, Kate Mitchell, Risa Jaroslow, and AXIS Dance Company, among others. Robin’s classes are focused on beginners and older adults, where she loves to see people find joy and confidence as they build strength, balance, and grace through dance.
