Artmaking is at the heart of our work. The Center provides fiscal sponsorship support for local artists, residency opportunities, and artist services for individual artists and organizations.
For more than six decades, Shawl-Anderson Dance Center (SADC) has been a home for movement, creativity, and artistic exploration. Through our Fiscal Sponsorship Program, we extend that commitment beyond our studios by helping independent artists, choreographers, cultural practitioners, and small dance organizations build sustainable careers and thriving creative practices. Fiscal sponsorship provides artists with the administrative and organizational infrastructure needed to grow their work while maintaining their artistic independence. Sponsored artists can receive tax-deductible contributions, apply for grants through SADC's nonprofit status, and access individualized support in fundraising, grant writing, donor stewardship, marketing, event production, and organizational development. But fiscal sponsorship at Shawl-Anderson is more than an administrative service—it is an investment in artistic sustainability, cultural preservation, and community belonging.
A Home for Many Voices
We believe the future of dance is expansive. Our fiscally sponsored artists represent a rich spectrum of cultures, identities, generations, and artistic perspectives that reflect the diversity of the Bay Area and beyond. The program supports artists working across contemporary and traditional forms, including Afro-diasporic dance traditions, Chinese dance, Mexican folklórico, South Asian dance practices, experimental performance, interdisciplinary work, community-based arts, disability-centered artistry, queer and trans creative expression, and emerging movement forms that challenge conventional boundaries. Each artist brings unique stories, cultural knowledge, and creative vision to our community. Together, they create an ecosystem where multiple histories, perspectives, and movement traditions are celebrated and shared.
Cultivating Belonging Through Dance
At Shawl-Anderson, belonging means more than being welcomed through the door. It means being seen, valued, and empowered to contribute to the life of the community. Our Fiscal Sponsorship Program creates opportunities for artists from diverse backgrounds and levels of experience to access resources, build meaningful connections, and bring their work to audiences. We recognize that there is no single pathway into dance, and no single way to belong. By supporting artists at various stages of their careers, we foster a creative environment where emerging voices can grow alongside established practitioners, cultural traditions are honored, and innovation can flourish.
Strengthening the Bay Area Dance Ecosystem
Our sponsored artists create performances, educational programs, workshops, community gatherings, cultural celebrations, and interdisciplinary projects that enrich neighborhoods throughout the region. Their work strengthens community connections, preserves cultural traditions, expands access to the arts, and creates opportunities for people of all backgrounds to experience the transformative power of dance. As a fiscal sponsor, Shawl-Anderson is proud to support artists whose work reflects the many communities we serve and whose creativity helps shape a more vibrant, inclusive, and connected future.

Fiscally Sponsored Artists

Shawl-Anderson Dance Center currently partners with two local organizations to support a yearly residency: the Black Choreographers Festival and the Bay Area International Deaf Dance Festival.
At this time, SADC has paused its other Artist in Residence offerings.
Since 2016, SADC has been working with BCF to select one or two artists a year to have a residency here at Shawl-Anderson Dance Center. Each artist receives 25 hours of space and a stipend. The 2026 Black Choreographers Festival Artist in Residence is Marianna Hester.
We are proud that the Bay Area International Deaf Dance Festival began here in the SADC building! Now the festival flourishes throughout the Bay Area each summer. SADC partners with Antoine Hunter, the founder and director of BAIDDF, to offer a summer residency each year working towards the festival. This residency is comprised of 50 hours of space and a stipend.
