The groups for the 2022 World’s Strongman Man (WSM) Qualifying stage have been announced, and speculation about which strongmen will earn their way to the Final is underway. The six strongmen in each of the five groups will clash in five events over three days — May 24-26, 2022. The winner of each group will advance to the Final, and the second and third-place finishers will go head-to-head in a Stone-Off.
The five events of the group stage are the Loading Race and Deadlift Ladder on day one, the Car Walk and the Log Lift on day two, and the Wrecking Ball Hold and Stone-Off on day three. Below are predictions of how each group will fare and who will likely make it to the 2022 WSM Final.
Below is a breakdown for each group in the Qualifying stage with their predicted rank and who wins the Stone-Off. Bolded athletes in each group are those predicted to advance to the Final.
The biggest event on the strength sports calendar (at least as measured by the collective size of its participants) is finally here. The 2022 World's Strongest Man competition kicks off on May 24 in Sacramento, California, and runs through the week for a five-day contest ending with the champion crowned on May 29.
The field of 30 athletes is filled with familiar names for fans of the sport. Reigning champion Tom Stoltman will look to defend his 2021 title, but he'll have plenty of competition. Former World's Strongest Man winnersOleksii Novikov (2020) and Brian Shaw (who finished second in 2021 and is a four-time champ) are slated to take part, and Stoltman's brother, Luke, could also make a push for the podium. Rob Kearney, a.k.a. 'The World's Strongest Gay' returns to competition after recovering from injuries and beating testicular cancer.
The biggest challenge for Stoltman's repeat bid, however, is likely Martins Licis. The 2019 World's Strongest Man champ was forced to miss the last two years of WSM competition as he recovered from a series of injuries and being hit by a car. Since returning to strongman, Licis has been on a hot streak, winning both the Rogue Invitational late last year and the Arnold Strongman Classic earlier in 2022. With a win, Licis could cement his position as the premier athlete in the sport.
The competition will consist of three days of qualifying events, with highlights including the new Deadlift Ladder, which challenges competitors to pull a series of barbells ranging from 650 to 750 pounds. Once the field is narrowed down to the top athletes, there will be two days of finals. Here are the rest of the scheduled events:
Group 1 features the defending WSM, Tom Stoltman. He will face a combination of veterans and rising stars. Many fans and experts expect him to come out of this lineup with one of the two spots for the Finals.
The other spot is wide open, and any of the other five contestants could be one of the 10 finalists come Thursday, May 27th. Faires and Smaukstelis have the most recent experience on the WSM stage and competed in the 100-plus degree Sacramento heat in 2021, which might give them a leg up on O’Dwyer, Angulo, and Rheaume.
This is the group of death. 2020 WSM champion Oleksii Novikov cannot catch a break when it comes to Group pairings at strongman’s biggest contest. He was in Group 5 in 2021, which was the most competitive. He missed out on the spot in the Final after losing a tiebreaker in the Pickaxe Hold to Kevin Faires, who lost his Stone-Off to Luke Stoltman. As previously mentioned, Thompson won that group.
Despite fighting to defend his home country of Ukraine against the Russian invasion, Novikov has still posted incredible results in recent contests, including a win at the 2022 Europe’s Strongest Man (ESM) contest and a second-place finish at the 2022 Arnold Strongman Classic. The combination of very speed-focused events — Loading Race, Deadlift Ladder, Car Walk — makes Novikov the winner pick for this group. His results are just too consistent to ignore, and the event lineup is too favorable for him not to be the top pick.
