7th Annual Teen Modern Intensive for High School Students
3 weeks: July 21 - August 8, 2008
10 am - 4 pm each day
Shawl-Anderson Dance Center is pleased to offer its 7th Annual Teen Modern Intensive. This program is for students who just completed grades 8 through 12 who have previous dance experience. Students will be divided into two levels based on their experience. Students will participate in four classes a day Monday - Friday including: modern technique, composition, choreography, ballet, and special topics. Intensive students will have the opportunity to select some of the classes they will be taking to best fit their interests and goals. There will be a final presentation of material learned in all of the classes on Friday, August 8th at 4 pm at the Center.
The Teen Modern Intensive is a special workshop geared towards serious pre-professional dance students, who would like to participate in a rigorous training program that will be physically and technically challenging. By participating in several classes a day for 15 days, students will be immersed in dance and learn a lot of material within a brief amount of time. A dance intensive can give students a taste of what college dance programs are like.
All classes will be taught in the studios at Shawl-Anderson Dance Center in Berkeley. Teachers will include S-A staff members as well as guest teachers from Bay Area dance companies.
As an organization committed to serving youth, Shawl-Anderson is also pleased to have a research & evaluation component to the intensive for the third year. Dancers will have the option of participating in the study. Through journaling and discussions, dancers will have the opportunity to document their learning processes.
The goal of this study is to explore dance, cognition, and identity - the embodied nature of learning to dance. Most views of cognition focus primarily on the mind, overlooking the embodied and social dimensions of learning. Dance provides an ideal setting in which to explore these dimensions of cognition. Our study is part of a larger research project directed by colleague and fellow dancer Mira-Lisa Katz, a professor at Sonoma State University in the English Department and an adjunct faculty member at UC Berkeley in the Education Department. Ms. Katz will be on-site during the intensive to facilitate activities related to this research.
A typical day includes:
- 10:00-11:15 Modern Technique (2 levels)
- 11:15-11:30 Break
- 11:30-12:45 Student's Choice: composition (making dances) or choreography (learning dances)
