Artist in Residence Program
In December, 2004, the Shawl-Anderson Dance Center established its Artist in Residence Program. Each year two local choreographers are selected as Artists in Residence. One residency runs January through June, the other July through December. The residency includes:
- weekly rehearsal space
- free company classes
- a reception
- a workshop for the Shawl-Anderson community
Shawl-Anderson Dance Center offers one of the few artist in residence programs in the Bay Area. The Center believes in the value of giving artists time and space to create work, free of expectations of an end product. In the Bay Area, regularly renting studio space is one of the biggest expenses for choreographers, and Shawl-Anderson strives to help two artists each year make work without struggling to pay for space.
The 2008 Artists in Residence are choreographers Abigail Hosein, Aileen Kim, and Marcia Cantillana.
