Ballet
Ages: 5-18
Shawl-Anderson offers a unique ballet program for children and teens. Our ballet classes are fun and challenging. The ballet program focuses on the language of the ballet form, proper alignment, and musicality. Ballet is a wonderful style to learn because it is a foundation for so many other styles of dance. The Shawl-Anderson ballet program and its teachers reflect contemporary ballet aesthetics.
Attire: Girls-Black Leotard, pink tights, and ballet slippers; long hair must be kept back in a neat bun. Boys-white T-shirt, black tights, white slippers. Teens may wear any color leotard.

It is strongly recommended that students in Teen Ballet I and Teen Ballet II take class twice a week. Register for both classes to take class twice a week.
Modern
Ages: walkers-18
The modern dance style is where the Shawl-Anderson story has its roots and where Frank and Victor began. Our Children's and Teen program offers classes for the very young all the way up to age 18, including a pre-professional track for serious students. Modern dance explores the concepts of space, time, and energy. Using much of the basic vocabulary of ballet, modern dance is a style that requires strong technique, and creativity.
Attire: Leotards, tank tops, tights, and exercise pants are all clothing options. No street clothes (e.g. Jeans), and no baggy tops that cover the waistline. Hair should be up.

Jazz
Ages: 9-18
The jazz classes at Shawl-Anderson involve warm-ups, traveling work, and learning combinations. Each class begins with a ballet-based warm-up that leads into a final jazz combination. The ballet work used in the beginning of class builds the strength and stability that is needed to execute the technical jazz work that happens at the end of class. The Shawl-Anderson Teen Jazz classes, taught by Zafra Miriam, follow in the tradition of Savage Jazz founder and teacher, Reginald Savage.
