ARTISTS IN RESIDENCE PROGRAM (AIR)
In December, 2004, Shawl-Anderson Dance Center established its Artist in Residence Program. Each year three local choreographers are selected as Artists in Residence. Residencies run January through April, May through August and September through December.
The residency includes:
- weekly rehearsal space
- free company classes
- opportunities to perform at the Center and/or run workshops or open rehearsals
Shawl-Anderson Dance Center believes in the value of giving artists time and space to create work, free of expectations to create an end product. In the Bay Area, regularly renting studio space is one of the biggest expenses for choreographers, and Shawl-Anderson strives to help three artists each year make work without struggling to pay for space.
To apply for a residency, please send a 1-2 page letter addressed to Frank Shawl to the attention of Rebecca Johnson, Managing Director. The letter should describe your work and choreographic experience, explain why you would benefit from a residency, and include links to video of your work online if available. Additional support materials are welcome including DVDs, reviews, letters of support, etc. but are not required. Letters should be submitted each year by November 1st with a decision made by December 1st regarding residencies for the following year. If you have other questions regarding residencies, please email rebecca@shawl-anderson.org.
